  2. conductor, from 1895 until his death, of the
  3. London Promenade Concerts, now named after
  4. him. He promoted a national interest in music
  5. and encouraged many young composers. He
  6. studied at the Royal Academy of Music and
  7. became an organist and operatic conductor. As
  8. a composer he is remembered for the Fantasia
  9. on British Sea Songs 1905, which ends each
  10. Promenade season.
